This song was written by a four-year old in Russia. Nice song. I like to play it and then have the kids tell me who else they want to always be, besides there Mama. Usually I get Daddy, Grandma, Grandpa, Brother, Family…Fun song.
This post is especially for my kindergarten class at Mountain View Elementary!
As you can see from the video, this is The Ants Go Marching Down, accompanied by banjo. This is great activity song. Have the kids stand up and march. Act out what the ants are doing, and when they are going down, have the kids get lower and lower toward the floor, then stand up again for the next verse. I know there are 10 verses but I only put 4 on here. That’s about all I can take, and it seems plenty for preschool or kindergarten classes. Actually this is also a fun one for 1st and 2nd grades.
In my assembly programs I show how When Johnny Comes Marching Home has the same music as The Ants Go Marching Home. Originally it was an Irish song called Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye, which again shows the strong Irish roots in American music.
Hi. My name is Craig Newton. I am a professional musician, music specialist, and singer-songwriter. One of my main activities is going to schools and libraries to present music programs where I perform on a wide variety of instruments.
For the past 10 years or so I have been doing artist-in-residence sessions at local elementary schools. I have a program that brings singing, rhythm activities, and knowledge of instruments to the students. In this blog I want to share resources and information to teachers, parents, musicians, and anyone who is involved in bringing music into our schools. We need to me more proactive these days since there seems to be no budget for traditional music teachers.
Please help me with your posts. I will be sharing song lyrics and chords to songs by grade level in my next posts.
