May There Always Be Sunshine

This song was written by a four-year old in Russia. Nice song. I like to play it and then have the kids tell me who else they want to always be, besides there Mama. Usually I get Daddy, Grandma, Grandpa, Brother, Family…Fun song.

This post is especially for my kindergarten class at Mountain View Elementary!

The Ants Go Marching Down

As you can see from the video, this is The Ants Go Marching Down, accompanied by banjo. This is great activity song. Have the kids stand up and march. Act out what the ants are doing, and when they are going down, have the kids get lower and lower toward the floor, then stand up again for the next verse. I know there are 10 verses but I only put 4 on here. That’s about all I can take, and it seems plenty for preschool or kindergarten classes. Actually this is also a fun one for 1st and 2nd grades.

In my assembly programs I show how When Johnny Comes Marching Home has the same music as The Ants Go Marching Home. Originally it was an Irish song called Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye, which again shows the strong Irish roots in American music.

The More We Get Together

I love to have preschool and Kindergarten students do this song because it promotes friendship and is easy to learn and sing. Even better when you incorporate hand motions with it. It is a very simple song to sing and if you play an instrument it is only two chords. I do it in the key of D, so the chords are D and A. If you start in C, the chords would be C and G. In the video I use ukulele to play it. This is such a great instrument for young children to see and even strum a little.

Have fun with this song.

Yankee Doodle

Hi there.  Back to posting music.  This time I am posting me playing Yankee Doodle.  This is a great one to do with the kids, almost any age.  I have used this in 5th grade classrooms to talk about the British soldiers view of the  Continental soldiers.  Fun music, good for rhythm.  You can also try making up your own words, although this one is not as simple as some other songs.  More of those later.

The lyrics are:

Yankee Doodle went to town, riding on a pony

Stuck a feather in his hat and called it “macaroni”

Yankee Doodle keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy

Mind the music and the step, and with the girls be handy

Father and I went down to camp, along with Captain Goodin,

There we saw the men and boys as thick as hasty puddin’

Yankee Doodle keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy

Mind the music and the step, and with the girls be handy
